David Tidswell
Vintage Speed and Steam
Report - Unknown

David Tidswell presented his 4ih selection entitled Vintage Speed and Steam captured on 8mm Cine which he and his late father took in the 1960’s and early seventies. Opening with a motorcycle theme, the first reel showed sprints, speed trials and hill climbs (including the film makers themselves) on what are now considered classic racing motorcycles and sidecar outfits — plus Morgan sports cars at various locations.

The second reel featured the railways in the last years of steam, with enthusiasts gathering at a Neville Hill open day or travelling on steam specials — passing through Saltaire and Hirst Wood. Bradford Exchange Station was seen (modelled on Kings Cross) and David suggested that this fine building should have been saved and made into an exhibition hall like the former Manchester Central (now G-Mex). Leeds Central was also featured.
A film made by the L.N.E.R was the last presentation of the evening, showing “Princess Royal” being manufactured — from foundry, machining and assembly through to hauling an express at speed in 1936. It was an enjoyable finale for the combined meeting.
